I know it is a big question and an important question. Will the Ravens sign Melvin Ingram, one of the top NFL free agents remaining? As far as the list of pass-rushing NFL free agents still available, I would say that Ingram is at the top of the list.
What’s wrong with the Ravens pass rush?
The Ravens finished the 2020 season at around the middle of the pack in sacks with 39. Pittsburgh had the most sacks with 56 total. Baltimore would really benefit from improving their pass rush this offseason. Ingram is one of the top NFL free agents remaining and would be a solid signing for the Ravens.
Ingram is a solid veteran that could be signed at a pretty good price. Even though Spotrac has his calculated market value at $11 million a year, his Over the Cap valuation for 2020 is $1.5 million. With that being said, I don’t see him getting either one of those numbers. He is still on the market for a reason. I imagine he will get around $5-7 a year.
Melvin Ingram did have a slow start to his career, but from 2015 to 2019, he had a total of 44 sacks. That is an average of almost 9 sacks per season. He did miss half of 2020 due to a knee injury. That should lower his value, but he has been solid for most of his career. I believe he could come in and immediately help the Ravens pass rush. Ingram is one of the top NFL free agents remaining and would be one of the best NFL free agent signings for the Ravens right now.
I know there are a lot of people that want that so-called “number one wide receiver,” but in the Super Bowl, it was the pass-rush that helped the Buccaneers make easy work of the Chiefs. The Chiefs had offensive line issues, too. But the Buccaneers put a lot of pressure on Mahomes. They finished with 3 sacks on Mahomes and 2 interceptions. Mahomes also had a 52.3 QB rating. It was a horrible game for Mahomes. In fact, Mahomes ran for almost 500 yards before throwing or getting sacked in the Super Bowl.
So, let’s just say it is important that the next NFL free agent signing that the Ravens make is for the pass rush and/or offensive line. Or they should at least use a draft pick or two on the pass rush and offensive line. I would prefer they do all of the above.
